Tree Day in Vinton; after ceremony, volunteers will plant many on Saturday

A large community tree planting effort will take place in Vinton on Saturday morning, beginning at the Vinton Library. Volunteers will gather at the Library at 8 a.m.for a brief ceremony.  Groups of volunteers will then disperse to the Library and RiversideParkto replant 42 trees at the library and RiversidePark.  This is the first of many future replanting efforts by Vinton.

Central Lutheran School Offering Summer Camps

  Central Lutheran School (Newhall) will offer several camp opportunities this summer for children of all ages.  Registration is open to the public.   Mike and Dawn Embretson will head up a Volleyball Camp June 13 and 14 for students entering 3-8th grades.  Fundamentals of the game will be covered, including footwork, passing, hitting, blocking, serving and rotating through court positions.

Hannen Lake water quality meeting set for May 24

  Iowans interested in the results of a DNR study to improve water quality in Hannen Lake in Benton County can attend a meeting Thursday, May 24. Citizens are encouraged to bring their questions and ideas to improve the lake to the meeting for discussion.   Hannen Lake is on the state’s list of impaired waters for high levels of algae and pH.

Washington DC trip for students informational meeting

  Any 8th grade parent/student interested in more information regarding next year's trip to Washington DC/NY/Philadelphia, we will meet in the High School LMC at 7:30 on Sunday, May 20. We will be discussing fundraising ideas as well as providing answering any questions regarding the trip. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Steffen.

GOP congressional candidate Rod Blum to visit Vinton May 17

Rod Blum a resident of Dubuque and small business owner is coming to Vinton May 17, 2012.  The Meeting will begin at 7:00 PM at the U. S. Bank Community Building 414 A Ave., Vinton.  Mr. Blum is seeking the Republican Nomination to run for the 1st district seat U. S. House of Representatives.  The Primary for all political parties will be June 5th, 2012.

Benton County I Club to hear from Hawkeye coaches May 24 in Keystone

  The Benton County I-Club will be holding their spring banquet Thursday May 24th at the Keystone Turner Hall. The evening begins with a social hour at 5:30 with Dinner following at 6:30. Emceeing the event for the Benton County I-Club will be KCRG-TV9 Sports Director John Campbell. John is a very entertaining emcee that you will be sure to enjoy! John will be introducing a very engaging program including the following Hawkeye Leadership: Fran McCaffery, Men’s Basketball Tom Brands, Wrestling Jan Jensen, Woman’s Basketball Norm Parker, Retired Football Defensive Coordinator Other UI Coaches and Athletic Staff Every Hawkeye fan is invited to attend this event.

PEO Chapter MZ will meet at 1:30 PM on Monday, May 14, at the home of Carol Timmer assisted by Dawn Larson.

'Cinderella and the Silver Boot;' HSAP students perform

HSAP students will perform 'Cinderella and the Silver Boot' at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Vinton-Shellsburg Home School Assistance Program students helped write the play "Cinderella and the Silver Boot," which retells the fairly tale in a western setting. The students performed the show Friday evening and Sunday at the Tilford Elementary auditorium.

High school, middle choirs plan Choral Extravaganza Monday, in VSMS gym

  A Choral Extravaganza will be presented on Monday, May 7 at 7:00 in the middle school gymnasium.  Each of the middle school and high school choirs will be performing and year end choral awards will be presented.  The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.  Floor seating and bleacher seating will be available for the audience.
